This Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification Course was developed by the Mental Health Commission for Canada. In this session for service providers, course content empowers you to excel in client interactions by recognizing the signs of mental health issues and responding appropriately. You’ll strengthen your skills and be able to connect individuals with the supports they need. Moreover, this course extends beyond the workplace, equipping you with the knowledge and tools to assist colleagues, friends and family members facing mental health challenges. With mental health concerns affecting 1 in 3 Canadians at some point in their lives, this training is an invaluable asset for anyone seeking to make a positive impact.
What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing the worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Just like physical first aid is provided until medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate support is found or until the crisis is resolved.
Mental Health First Aid will help you to:
- Engage confidently when a person may be a danger to themselves or others.
- Provide help to prevent the mental health problem from developing into a more serious state.
- Promote the recovery of good mental health.
- Provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem.
Who is Mental Health First Aid for?
- Your community — Bring MHFA to your community, your workplace, and the general public
- Your workplace — Recognize signs and symptoms among colleagues and clients.
- Yourself — Be confident to provide assistance to your family, friends, and neighbours.
Format
This MHFA certification course is offered in two parts:
- Module 1 — is a self-directed, online module (approximately 2 hours) that requires completion prior to attending the virtual session on February 7.
- Module 2 & Module 3 — will be delivered as an 8-hour session (virtually via Zoom with the facilitator). Upon successful completion, each participant will be given a Certificate for Mental Health First Aid.
